The Mayflower to King Philip's Indian War
(Adventures in Colonial New England)

Author Michael Tougias brings local history to life through his exciting stories and events from the Mayflower to King Philip's War. Using artifacts, slides, and period diaries Michael helps students explore the 1600's in New England and a different way of life. will give a lecture and slide presentation on the war between the Colonists and Native Americans in 1675-76. Michael is the co-author of King Philip's Indian War: The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict and author of the acclaimed Until I Have No Country (A novel of King Philip's War).

The first part of the presentation will discuss the Indian way of life, Colonial settlements, and the events leading up to the war. The second part covers the battles and the strategy during this cataclysmic war, which on a per capita basis was the bloodiest conflict in our nation's history. Questions and answers follow. The presentation can be altered for any age group from first grade to high school.

Michael also motivates students to write, by showing how his ideas are turned into books. He brings an example of his "sloppy copy" (rough draft) and shows how it is continually improved before publication. Former Commissioner of Indian Affairs for Massachusetts and member of the Wampanoag Tribe, Edith Andrews, is quoted on the novel's back cover, commenting that Until I Have No Country "captures the essence of the Native American." King Philip's War has been acclaimed in Booklist as "superb" and by the Boston Globe as "fascinating".
